Family Smiles Dental Care

My family and I visited this office for our scheduled appointment. During the visit, they performed a dental X‑ray on my child without obtaining our consent. When I questioned this, they dismissed it as a “misunderstanding.” I do not understand how failing to get parental consent—especially for a minor—can be considered a simple misunderstanding. I wanted to speak with Dr. Joe so I could understand the medical implications of the X‑ray, including whether frequent or repeated X‑rays could pose any health risks for my child. All I wanted was to have a conversation with him, raise my concerns, and make sure I understood if there was anything I needed to be worried about medically. The staff told me he had left for a funeral and would call me back, but I never received a call. When I called again, the same staff member then told me the doctor was unavailable because he was working on a procedure. I said that was fine and requested a call back when he had a moment. I was then placed on hold, and afterward the staff member claimed the doctor’s message was: “If you’re not happy with our service, we can send your records to another hospital, but he will not talk to you.” What concerned me even more was the staff’s attitude. They showed no concern whatsoever that they had performed a medical procedure on a minor without parental consent. Instead, they tried to dismiss my concerns by saying, “Oh, it’s free, it’s covered by your insurance, you don’t have to worry.” It is extremely insensitive to assume that money is what I’m worried about. My concern is my child’s safety, proper consent, and understanding the medical impact—not the cost. I have been coming to this place for the last three years and have never had any issues with Dr. Joe. That is exactly why I am not even sure if he is aware of this incident or if the staff is speaking on his behalf without his knowledge. If he is not aware, then this is my way of making him aware. But if he is aware and is actually asking the staff to communicate this way, then this is very unfortunate. This is not how patients or parents should be treated, especially in a situation involving a child and medical procedures performed without approval.

I love Family Smiles. The staff is so friendly and supportive, and Dr. Joe is an exceptional dentist. I’m happy with every cleaning and procedure I and my family members have received at the practice. :)

Very friendly staff, the front desk, check in thanked me for coming in early and printed out the paperwork for me, to fill out since my phone wasn’t working. The hygienist was so nice, very thorough, got my teeth so extremely clean while checking on me asking if I was ok the whole time! Check out presented me with a treatment plan for my next visit, so I could be prepared with any out of pocket costs and then was able to schedule me w/ in a few weeks, which was very convenient! Overall the staff and the doctor seem to love their job considering how nice and helpful everyone was! Thank you to everyone there.

The staff is so friendly and the hygienist was absolutely amazing with my 8 year old son! Highly recommend!!

I’ve been to many, many dentist. I’m now 66 years old, and FINALLY I found a not good, but GREAT dentist! Finally no one in this office pressured me to come back. However I assure you I’m going back! The dentist was kind, fast, and made me feel very comfortable. The assistant was absolutely charming. Bravo! Thank you!
